Shorting has become a profitable investment this year.

It’s been a while since we last checked in on our annual Fantasy Investing League, and we’re sorry about that—we’ve been a bit distracted by trade wars and real wars and Fed drama and Mag 7 doldrums and gold records and everything in between.

But enough excuses, let’s take a look at how some of our subscribers have invested over these last wild few months.

All hail the king

This year’s league introduced the ability for players to short stocks, and one person has used that ability to its fullest. Known only as Shorting King, this mysterious tycoon has dominated the field, turning his starting $100,000 in January into $2,478,028 today.

As the name implies, Shorting King has utilized shorts consistently across the last few months, but his negative bets have recently had a much more positive impact on his portfolio. One of his biggest short investments is in none other than Regencell Biosciences, which we mentioned earlier this week as a stock famous for soaring about 60,000% at one point this year. Shorting the stock in the hopes of capitalizing on some profit-taking there has been a very smart move.

Of course, shorting a stock comes with some serious risk. Just ask Andrew Q., who is all the way in last place with a startling $63,813,727.75 loss. He, too, took a chance on shorting Regencell, but his short bet was just a bit too early, and the company’s massive move upward forced him to cover the stock and take some serious losses.

Halftime is over

If you haven’t made millions of fake dollars yet, don’t worry—it’s still anyone’s game. Several members of the top 10 have only made a handful of investments, including ninth place Brad F., who only made a single purchase back in February: quantum computing stock D-Wave. Or if you’ve got way too much free time, you can imitate Alex J., who has made an impressive 234 trades during his climb into second place.

Whether you find yourself buying and selling every day, or spotting that one can’t-miss opportunity and holding it for months, there are plenty of paths to victory in this year’s Fantasy Investing League.—MR
